MAAGP Member Michael Surma named SuperintendentMAAGP Member, Michael Surma in the News! At their February 6, 2008, meeting, the Henry County Board of Education named Mr. Michael Surma the next Superintendent of Schools. Current School Superintendent Dr. Jack Parish and Mr. Surma will develop a transition plan enabling Mr. Surma to completely assume all duties of the position July 1, 2008. The Superintendent selection process conducted by the Henry County Board of Education began October 2007 following the announcement of Dr. Parish's retirement effective June 30, 2008. After defining the expectations required by the next school system leader and announcing the superintendent vacancy, the Board received applications through November 14, 2007, and invited several of the applicants to interview. Following the initial interviews, the Board conducted a second round of interviews and named three finalists for the position January 14, 2008: Dr. Ethan Hildreth, Dr. Vickie Perdue Scott*, and Mr. Michael Surma. (*Note: Dr. Vickie Purdue Scott is also a MAAGP Member.) Mr. Surma currently serves as Chief of Staff for Henry County Schools. Prior to serving in this position, Mr. Surma served in central administrative positions as Special Projects Coordinator and Science Coordinator. Mr. Surma began his work with Henry County Schools in 1995 as a teacher at Henry County High School. Prior to coming to Henry County Schools, Mr. Surma worked as an educator in Illinois as the Director of Laboratory Schools for Illinois State University, a Faculty Associate with Illinois State University, and an Assistant Principal at University High School. Mr. Surma earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Illinois State University.
